Ties for a Brown Suit

A brown suit is warm, and the tie has to agree with it. That rules out most of the cool, corporate answers that work against navy and grey, and opens up a set of colours sitting in the same earth register.

Burgundy is the first to reach for. Deep enough to hold against a mid or dark brown, warm enough that the two never look like they came from different wardrobes. Forest green works from the other side of the wheel and reads as traditional rather than adventurous. Burnt orange looks like a risk and is not: against brown it is a tonal step rather than a contrast.

Navy is the cool exception, and the safest departure when everything else in the outfit is warm. Champagne is the lightest option here, a pale gold that lifts a dark brown suit without adding a second strong colour. Brown on brown works as well, provided the shades sit far enough apart: honey brown against dark chocolate, never two browns a shade apart.
