Overview
Black Grenadine Tie. Handmade in Como, Italy.
Black pairs with as much as navy does. What separates them is not the colour but the association, and black brings one navy does not. It is the second tie to own rather than the first, not because it is less useful, but because it asks you to know the room.
The Weave
Grenadine is a leno weave: two warp threads twist around each weft as it passes, locking it in place. In black that matters more than in any other colour. A flat black silk reads as a void against a dark suit, with nothing for the eye to hold. The open weave catches light along the twist, so a black grenadine tie keeps depth and shape under a jacket instead of disappearing into it.
This is the garza fina weight, the finer and tighter of the two weaves, woven in Como on the same century-old looms as the rest of the range.
How to Wear It
Black belongs with a black suit, a charcoal suit and a grey suit, and with a tuxedo on the evenings a bow tie is not called for. Against navy it is the understated choice, and it holds from a boardroom to an evening event. With a white shirt it is the most formal tie short of black tie, which is why it holds up in business attire as readily as it does after six.
Construction
100% silk with a wool interlining, which gives the knot its dimple and keeps the tie from creasing through a long day. Tipped: the silk tail is folded back at the end and a wool backing is sewn into the tip, so it has weight and a finished face laid flat as well as worn. Some makers leave grenadines untipped, which keeps the tip lighter.
Cut, sewn and finished by hand in Como by Italian artisans who have been doing it for generations. That is what you are looking at in the drape, and in the stitching where the tip is closed.

Black is the second grenadine to own, after the Navy Grenadine Tie. Both are versatile. Black is second because it is the more deliberate of the two. The Make
3¼″ at the blade. The proportion that holds against both a notch lapel and a spread collar, full enough to anchor a sport coat without dominating a suit.
Woven in Como on traditional jacquard looms.
An open weave silk made on antique looms in Como. More depth than plain silk, more discretion than a printed pattern. The cloth that dresses up and down.
A wool core inside the silk, slip-stitched along the length. Gives the knot body, the blade weight, and lets the tie release its creases overnight.
A single thread, gathered loosely along the length of the tie. The reason a well-made tie can be tugged, knotted, and untied for years and still return to its shape.
A hand-sewn anchor at each end of the slip stitch. Small, structural, and the reason the tie does not slowly come undone along its length.
Cut from the same silk as the face of the tie. The blade is held by the cloth it was made for.
With a clear window, so the tie is found at a glance, kept wrinkle-free, and shielded from dust, moisture, and the wear of travel. Made to keep. Made to give.
