Should dress socks match your trousers or your shoes?
A dress sock can match the trousers or the shoes, and both are correct. The choice decides where the eye rests, and what carries the transition from trouser to shoe.
Matched to the trousers, the sock runs the length of the leg so the whole line reads as one. That is the steadiest answer under a suit, and the one to reach for when you want the eye to travel upward rather than stop at the ankle.
Matched to the shoe, it finishes the foot instead. This is the better answer when brown leather sits beneath a darker trouser, where a sock in the trouser colour would leave the shoe stranded.
Or take a third colour that sits between the two, burgundy between navy and dark brown, and the sock becomes a detail in its own right rather than a join. None of the three outranks the others. They do different work.
The one pairing to avoid is the sock to the tie. The two are never in the same field of view, so matching them earns nothing.
