Why all-cotton dress socks

Mako is a long-staple Egyptian cotton. Longer fibres need less twist to hold together, so the yarn comes out smoother, sheds less, and resists pilling through repeated washing. Cotton also breathes, which counts for a lot when a sock spends nine hours inside a leather shoe.

Lisle socks: mercerised Egyptian cotton

Every pair is knit from lisle, the fine, smooth cotton sock yarn hosiers have long used for dress socks. The yarn is mercerised under tension before knitting, which sets the fibre, deepens the colour so it holds through washing, and leaves a low sheen that reads as dress rather than sport.

Thin, fine-gauge cotton dress socks

Knit on 240-needle machines. A higher needle count puts more stitches into the same area, so the fabric is finer and sits closer under a dress shoe without bunching. The heel is reinforced and hand-linked, and the toe is closed by hand, which leaves a flat seam in place of the ridge most socks have across the toes.
